Our intent We can apply our ingenuity and industry to new ends

People are capable of much that is good. Human ingenuity and industry have lifted millions out of poverty and brought unparalleled wealth and growth.

But today we stand at a juncture. If we carry on our current path of production and consumption, we not only endanger nature but we imperil the safety and dignity of countless communities around the world.

We must change course - and we have the means to do so. We can apply our ingenuity and industry to new ends: to redefine value beyond shareholder interests alone, and to re-engineer how we grow and distribute wealth for the good of all. Armed with a new understanding and necessary tools, industry can combat social inequality and turn the tide on the climate crisis.

A time to act

Laudes Foundation is joining the growing movement to accelerate a transition to a just and regenerative economy.

Our vision is necessarily ambitious. We envision global markets that value all people and respect nature. An economy in which industries uplift all who participate in them, and regenerate and restore nature as a fundamental part of what they do.

Our method is resolutely practical. We support brave action that harnesses industry’s power for good. Action that inspires industry, working in collaboration to create solutions and tools. And action that challenges industry, holding it to account and incentivizing change.

The time to act is now.

Who we are

Laudes Foundation is an independent foundation and part of the Brenninkmeijer family enterprise.

Launched in 2020, we build on the six generations of entrepreneurship and philanthropy and stand next to the COFRA businesses and the family’s other private philanthropic activities, including Porticus, Good Energies Foundation and Argidius Foundation.

Although independent from them, we learn from their past and present experiences. In particular, Laudes Foundation will advance the industry-changing work of C&A Foundation, and build on the experience of its flagship initiative, Fashion for Good.

What we do - We draw upon the comparative advantages of philanthropy and business

We are ready to work with industry, combining our philanthropic purpose with its scale and reach, drawing upon the comparative advantages of both. In this way, we work persistently and collaboratively to:

Influence capital

We work through the global financial system to redirect the flow of capital so that investment encourages good business practices. To do that, we work with financial actors to inspire change and align incentives, and we foster new economic thinking and new business models.

Transform industries

We work with industries to tackle the most pressing and systemic issues, starting with those that we know well and can impact positively:

– Fashion, a fast-moving consumer industry; where we continue to develop the sector-changing work of C&A Foundation

– The built environment, an asset-based industry, with the potential to transform the spaces in which we live and work

How we do it

To transform the global economic system and the way it defines value, we support initiatives that work with the actors who have the power to change it.

Initiatives that work with businesses, shareholders and investors to create a new definition of value; with thought leaders and academics to make that definition credible; with policy-makers to make it effective; with civil society to make it plausible; with media and movement-builders to make it desirable; and with citizens to make it beneficial.

We always collaborate with and learn from peers and partners, and share the unique knowledge that we develop together.

Our name

Laudes is derived from the Latin word for 'praise'. It alludes to the Lauds morning prayers and refers to the 2015 papal encyclical, Laudato si': On Care for Our Common Home.

The encyclical presents the intertwined social and environmental crises as the result of the pursuit of limitless growth. It calls us all to take "swift and unified global action" and makes a particular call to the world of business.

Touching on the Catholic faith of the Brenninkmeijer family entrepreneurs and the vision set out in Laudato si', our name reveals a source of inspiration. At the same time, Laudes invites everyone to draw from their own inspiration and believe, in their core, that change is possible.
