A just transition in Food: Exploring impacts on workers in the food supply chain
The Just Transition in Food report spotlights the opportunity to build a resilient food system that prioritises the inclusion and agency of workers that sustain this 8 trillion-dollar global industry.
The food system of today is responsible for one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is a leading cause of biodiversity loss, socio-economic inequality, and various public health crises.
The EAT-Lancet Commission outlined major shifts needed in food production and consumption patterns to create a food system that supports human, societal, and planetary health.
In this report, we partnered with Dalberg Advisors to study the impacts of transitioning to a planetary health diet - on those workers that farm, produce, and package everything we consume. We looked at opportunities for businesses, governments, investors, CSOs, and worker organisations to both collaborate and innovate.
Findings include:
-
Current working conditions of workers in food supply chains
-
Expected job losses and displacement due to lower meat consumption, decarbonisation measures, and rising climate-related events (floods, drought, heat stress)
-
Opportunities for new jobs as we transition to plant-rich diets
We invite you to read the report enclosed below. Join the movement to building a food system that nourishes people, protects the planet, and empowers workers for generations to come.
