Putting the spotlight on climate change's impact on workers and vulnerable communities
Laudes Foundation works with the Pulitzer Center to support their work covering underreported stories of how workers and vulnerable communities are impacted by climate change as part of our Narratives and Labour Rights programmes.
The Pulitzer Center supports many reporting projects on climate change in the news media, highlighting the interconnection between climate issues and their effects on labour, particularly vulnerable workers and communities. By supporting journalists and media outlets with their reporting and audience engagement strategies, the initiative has amplified important stories globally and in local and national outlets and influenced key audiences.
The Center recently supported journalist Jazmín Acuña’s project on the impact of extreme heat on delivery app workers in Paraguay. Working with the regional outlet El Surtidor, a team of journalists conducted research and explained the experience of delivery workers in the face of extreme heat, a consequence of climate change, analysed the growing crisis, and outlined how workers protect themselves against heat-related illness. After publication, the Paraguay Ministries of Labour and Health attended an in-person event hosted by the Center’s grantees on research findings related to climate and health.
Through engagement efforts, the Center has increased the visibility of stories like Jazmín Acuña’s across multiple regions, making sure these stories are directly reaching key audiences who are compelled to take action. The Center's digital campaign is reaching 1.6 million people and inspiring over 6,900 individuals to actively subscribe to the newsletter and join the conversation. Through community outreach and strategic local partnerships, the Center has facilitated direct dialogues between workers, decision makers, and supporters of the climate and labour cause, leading to concrete outcomes like the policy review with the Department of Labor in Surabaya, Indonesia and sparking self-organised campaigns by worker groups in Bangkok, Thailand.
In terms of reporting efforts, the Center’s “Our Work/Environment” initiative has supported over 88 pieces of coverage addressing the intersection of labour and climate across various regions. This work has been viewed a cumulative 1.58 million times online across 43 publications and an estimated 10 million across print and broadcast outlets. There has been pick up from other media sources including The Financial Times, TIME Magazine, The Atlantic, Quartz, PBS Newshour, Morning Context (India), LiveMint (India), iWatch Africa, El Pais and Tirto.id (Indonesia), among other titles. The diverse formats of coverage (text, audio, video, broadcast) have also ensured a broader reach and engagement across different audiences and regions to solidify the narratives in the public's consciousness, including government, business, and finance leaders.
