Laudes Foundation is delighted to welcome engineer Richard Boyd to its innovative built environment team.

Richard takes up the role of senior programme manager: supporting and scaling zero carbon, circular and inclusive built environment interventions that work with and through industry to address the dual crises of inequality and climate change.

Richard joins Laudes with over 11 years' experience in design, engineering, research and consulting in buildings and infrastructure.

Prior to Laudes he worked in the Berlin office of global engineering consultancy Arup, leading a team of consultants that advised clients across Europe  on how to decarbonise their supply chains and product portfolios. He also managed the global strategic partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation: designing and implementing a programme of work to accelerate the adoption of circular economy principles in the built environment.

Welcoming the appointment, head of the build environment programme at Laudes Foundation, James Drinkwater says: “We believe the built environment needs to change the ‘rules of the game’ – making it viable, even profitable – for those who focus on creating more compact and liveable cities, who build with social impact as a driver not a risk, and who are trying to move regenerative bio-based materials from niche to norm. Richard will work directly with partners who share that same vision.”

“Richard has a proven track record of helping cities, firms, sectors and construction projects get ready for a carbon-constrained future and a circular economy. We look forward to him utilising this experience to continue to grow and develop our expanding grant portfolio in a sector which causes nearly 40% of global carbon emissions and a third of all waste.”

Richard says: “For the past two years seemingly every new or exciting initiative I have come across on decarbonisation and circular economy in the European built environment has been funded by Laudes, so I'm thrilled to be joining the Laudes built team, to continue and build on that work."

"We have the solutions to decarbonise the built environment sufficiently rapidly to keep Europe on a 1.5 degree trajectory. Now is the time to scale the solutions. I'm excited at the prospect of joining the team in finding and supporting partners across the continent."

The built environment touches every part of our lives. It has a significant role to play in defining a future that supports both people and nature. It must urgently transition from an extractive, unequal and carbon-intensive sector to a regenerative and inclusive one, shaping cities and buildings to provide true value for workers and residents.

At Laudes we harness the power of business for good, by targeting root causes and the actors that influence ‘demand’, such as governments, cities, investors, asset owners, developers, designers and insurers.  We work actively with changemakers and innovators to accelerate the move towards a zero-carbon and regenerative built environment, while improving social equity in the spaces that shapes people’s lives.
